A Tale of 2.5 Haircuts

As I've gotten older, I've become more aware (albeit less concerned) about others' opinions, but I can't help wondering about the universal experience surrounding women and hair... A quick Google search shows that it is a widespread topic.

I cut my hair short in 2011 because I was a young, new, business owner and wanted to be taken seriously. Should we have to cut our hair to be taken seriously? Of course not. But, deep in the rabbit hole of Google, it's clear that I employed an appearance-related control mechanism to navigate the challenges I was experiencing. Turns out, there's a lot of us that do that.

Around the holidays of 2017, I decided it was time to grow out my hair. I enjoyed the process and actually liked a lot of the in-between phases. The longer my hair, the younger people assumed I was.

Then, as I started doing media for Trash The Trophies this summer, I experienced  other strange comments, like "Oh you're so cute, but when you talk, you're so smart."

Whoa.

Do we discredit intelligence because of appearance?

Why can't we be cute and smart and successful and savvy?

In the weeks that followed, I decided to switch it up again to find a hairstyle more in between the pixie and the longer hair- a "lobby" (long bob). I mainly decided to do that because I was spending so much time blow drying my hair, which as it turns out, is one activity where multitasking is nearly impossible.

In the weeks to come, I'm going to continue focusing on experiences and challenges facing female business owners.

Until then, enjoy 5 of my favorite hair products!

  1. Buttercup Blow-Dryer from drybar: For my shorter hair, I had an Andis blow dryer I purchased because I loved it when I was staying at a hotel in NYC. As my hair got longer, I realized I needed an upgrade because drying my hair was taking so much time.

  2. Hold Me Hair Clips from drybar: Another game changer! Theses clips are a must-have!

  3. Redken Triple Take Hairspray: If I have a style that needs to stay, this is the only product that'll get the job done.

  4. Redken Brews Texture Pomade for Men: This product was a must-have for my pixie style. Highly recommended for shorter styles!

  5. Bed Head Curlipops: I love these curling wands. Perfect sizes for every length!
